Flappy Bird, popular app store game to disappear on Sunday

The developer of the popular mobile game Flappy Bird has threatened to removed his game from the Apple and Android app stores on Sunday - a week after the title's sudden surge in popularity.

Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird for indie Vietnam-based Dot Gears Studios, said in a tweet he would take the game down 22 hours from now.

If he keeps his promise, the game will go down on Sunday.

“I cannot take this anymore,” he said in a Saturday tweet via his Twitter account @dongatory.

“It is not anything related to legal issues,” said Nguyen in a later tweet.

Nguyen did not offer any additional details on his plan to pull the game, which soared to the top of the Free Games charts on both iTunes and Google Play. Flappy Bird has reached the million download mark since premiering in December 2013. It has also been raking in $50,000 per day in revenue, according to a recent interview.

Nguyen said the press was “overrating” the success of Flappy Bird and his other titles. “It is something I never want. Please give me peace,” Nguyen wrote.

The game features a small bird that players must navigate through a series of pipes by tapping the screen to keep the bird airborne, similar to the concept of Super Mario Brothers games.

Along with its simplicity, Flappy Bird was known for its high degree of difficulty, as the slightest brush with any object ended the game.
